IoTBridge wins new infrastructure project
Peter Rosengren 15th September 2020The Swedish government is currently investing huge amounts of financial resources to renew critical infrastructures and to cover the management of these structures until 2030. IoTBridge has been appointed as the coordinator of the project iBridge. Together with the Swedish Road Administration and the City of Stockholm IoTBridge will investigate new technological possibilities and develop solutions for next-generation bridge management and maintenance methods.

The Västerbron in central Stockholm is a steel arch road bridge and is one of the major bridges of Stockholm, opened in 1935. It is also famous for being the toughest passage of the Stockholm Marathon. A wireless sensor system was installed during this summer on the structure. The system consists of 5 strain gauges, 1 inclinometer, 2 three directional accelerometers and 1 temperature sensor. The structure will be monitored with the IoTBridge Bridge Monitoring System. This includes sensor integration modules, wireless gateways, communication modules, MQTT Message Broker, GOST database for aggregation and storage of measurements and cloud infrastructure with algorithms and machine learning modules. IoTBridge and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm have developed a machine learning method to improve the accuracy in damage detection using acceleration data.

IoTBridge recruits sensor installer
Peter Rosengren 30th January 2020IoTBridge has employed Stefan Trillkott, one of Swedens most experienced bridge sensor installers. Stefan has worked many years as Laboratory manager at KTH Byggvetenskap and collected vast experience on how to mount sensors on bridges to make them deliver correct measurements for a long period of time. Secure sensor mounting is fundamental to get a stable, correct and trusted data stream signal, to enable processing and analysing the data.

IoTBridge has acquired its first project, a railway bridge in the very north of Sweden. The bridge will be equipped with two accelerometers and two strain gauge sensors during summer.
Due to deformations in the embankment, the sagging of the rail has caused abrupt changes in the stiffness, creating a bump for the train to pass over when entering the bridge. As a rehabilitation action, concrete foundation slabs have been installed adjacent to the abutments in the transition zones in order to spread the change in stiffness over larger distances The collected data is transferred to the IoTBridge cloud and analysed. The main objective of the measurements is to verify the efficiency of the rehabilitation measure.

IoTBridges Edge Gateway offers a reliable and flexible monitoring solution for bridges. It supports both wireless sensors and wired sensors. This greatly reduces the deployment cost of the sensor system. The Bridge Edge Gateway can intelligently make local computations depending on the application needs. Measurements are transferred to the IoTBridge Cloud over standard mobile connections not requiring any expensive proprietary communication solutions.
