Bridge professor’s favorite constructions

Samhällsbyggarna, an association focusing on the development, building and management of Swedens future society, ran a feature about Raid Karoumi, the Research Director of CNets subsidiary IoTBridge and professor at KTHs department of bridge and steel construction written by Fredrik Hielscher.

An excursion into the fascinating world of bridge constructions and the opportunities new technologies create. Sweden has about 35.000 bridges, a population of constructions that is getting older, some structures over 100 years old, mostly railway bridges. The Swedish Transport Administration’s annual cost for the operation and maintenance of the bridges is around SEK 1.3 billion – a cost that risks increasing rapidly. But new advanced measurement and analysis methods can increase the life of bridges and result in fewer inspections and bridge reinforcements.Sensor-based condition assessment exists already and is used in many of todays products. In modern cars, you get a notifications about changes in the tire pressure, when it’s time to change oil or service the car, issues with system components. It’s the similar with bridges, the technology exists and is ready to be applied to bigger constructions to optimize maintenance and use.

iBridge presented at Stålbyggnadsdagen 2021

John Leander, from CNets subsidiary IoTBridge, presented the project iBridge on this year’s highlight for the steel construction industry, Stålbyggnadsdagen 2021, which was held 28th October in Stockholm.

iBridge aims to develop and demonstrate a full-scale digital instrumentation of bridges. The purpose is to complement manual inspections and to accelerate the industrialization of digital measurement and inspection services. The overall goal is to automate and make available existing knowledge that can reduce the costs for bridge management while guaranteeing safety.

Sweden municipalities alone manage more than 29,000 bridges, in addition to privately owned bridges and bridges owned by Swedish business and industry.

IoT Bridge Webinar

Monday the 21st of June CNets subsidiary IoTBridge organizes a Webinar in cooperation with Stockholm cities Trafikkontoret: “Digitalt beslutsstöd för komplex broinfrastruktur i urbana regioner” at 09:00-11:30 o-clock.

The event targets stakeholders related to bridge maintenance to introduce new digital solutions for bridge managements and maintenance.

The event will feature the following presentations on Swedish:

  • Stora Bælt, pilotprojekt för Maximo Civil Infrastructure; Jonas Back, Associate Partner & IT Architect, IBM.

IoTBridge wins new infrastructure project

The Swedish government is currently investing huge amounts of financial resources to renew critical infrastructures and to cover the management of these structures until 2030. IoTBridge has been appointed as the coordinator of the project iBridge. Together with the Swedish Road Administration and the City of Stockholm IoTBridge will investigate new technological possibilities and develop solutions for next-generation bridge management and maintenance methods.

Publication of MONICA Development Toolbox

MONICA created tools for smart cities to use IoT technologies to support the management of security and (un)wanted sound at large, open-air cultural and sporting events which attract and affect many people.

With the MONICA project finalised, the final Development toolbox is available for download on GitHub:

Software Development Toolbox

The MONICA Development Toolbox can be used to integrate various resources into the IoT Platform and hides the complexity of the communication with IoT devices. It contains sound and security applications for large, open-air events in city areas using IoT-enabled devices such as smart wristbands, video cameras, sound level meters and mobile phones. It is divided into three areas:

  • Software Developer Tools. These are packaged tools with user interfaces intended to be used by developers.
  • Generic Enablers. These are re-usable software components available in an Open Source GIT repository which can be used by entrepreneurs, start-ups and established companies alike.
  • Third Party Services and Tools. These are some openly available third-party tools that are recommended by the MONICA project to use when building Large Scale IoT applications. MONICA Tools and Generic Enablers have available interfaces for these third-party tools and services.

MONICA project successfully closed

The MONICA project demonstrated how cities can use IoT technologies to support the management of security and (un)wanted sound at large, open-air cultural and sporting events which attract and affect many people. Even though the project officially ended 31st of March 2020, the results live on and we invite you to browse our pages to see how you can benefit from the solutions and experiences of the project.

To accommodate the current required social distancing the final review was organised online.

than 3 years of intense collaboration at the Final Review organised remotely.

Achievements of the MONICA Project:

Applications for crowd safety and security

MONICA services include crowd and capacity monitoring, detection of security, health and safety incidents as well as location of and communication between staff, visitors and control centre.

Applications for sound monitoring and control

Organisers of concerts want to give their performers and audiences the best music experience but they also wish to comply with local regulations on environmental sound exposure. MONICA deploys an acoustic system consisting of novel sound field control schemes which provide an optimised sound field in the audience area while minimising the exposure to noise in neighbouring areas.

Applications for citizen engagement and innovation

MONICA created several user-driven applications, rooted in advanced technologies grown by the needs of cities and its people.
MONICA created an open data repository that enables cities to make MONICA sensor data available to the public. The aim is to provide factual information as a basis for better decision-making and enable the use of the results for new smart city applications.

IoTBridge recruits sensor installer

IoTBridge has employed Stefan Trillkott, one of Swedens most experienced bridge sensor installers. Stefan has worked many years as Laboratory manager at KTH Byggvetenskap and collected vast experience on how to mount sensors on bridges to make them deliver correct measurements for a long period of time. Secure sensor mounting is fundamental to get a stable, correct and trusted data stream signal, to enable processing and analysing the data.
